Background

Tax Help volunteers provide a free and confidential service to help people complete their tax returns.  Volunteers receive training and support from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Tax Help is for people on low incomes.  Tax Help volunteers help people with straight-forward tax matters and advise clients whether they need to lodge a tax return.  Tax Help volunteers assist clients with preparation of tax returns and claims for refunds of franking credits and the Education Tax Refund.  Tax returns are prepared using e-tax and lodged electronically.  The ATO will instruct volunteers on the preparation and lodgement of electronic tax returns.

You don’t need any experience to be a Tax Help volunteer.  Please apply if you are friendly, confident, interested in taxation, and can spare a few hours each week between late July and 31 October.  The 2-day training for Tax Help volunteers will be held  between 28 May to 1 June for students from Nathan campus while the training dates for Gold Coast students will be confirmed when you apply.  New volunteers are expected to attend all or most of the training.  Once you have completed training, you will need to pass an accreditation test.

The ATO will reimburse you for any reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, such as travel and telephone calls.

Staff at Griffith University Student Services will support volunteers by taking appointments, co-ordinating service availability, and providing facilities such as a computer, telephone and office.  The centre also advertises the service to members of the Griffith community.
